# CALM safeguards: Overload, Stuck, Ignited

> The safeguards of the CALM method (Change · Area · Level · Mode) are three built-in rules for the days when reality breaks the plan: Overload (cells ①–② hold more than three tasks), Stuck (a task has been postponed twice) and Ignited (a new Key for today appears during the day). The method knows what to do when life argues with the plan — and that is what separates a system from a list of tips. | Safeguard | Fires when | What the method does |
|---|---|---|
| ① Overload | Cells ①–② hold more than three tasks | Selection does not begin — Unload comes first |
| ② Stuck | A task has been postponed twice | Three exits in the evening; there is no third postponement |
| ③ Ignited | A new Key for today appears during the day | The Focus is reassembled — explicitly and with an explanation |

## ① Overload → Unload

More than three tasks in cells ①–② — that is, among the day's Key tasks? Selection does not begin. First comes Unload, four steps in order:

1. **Honesty.** Every Key answers the axis question again, with a horizon of today: how important is it to complete this today — and what does completing it today decide? Nothing to name — Important. *In most cases the Unload ends right here: overload almost always turns out to be Key inflation.*
2. **Whose move.** Of the remaining Key tasks: what can be handed over — Delegated; what waits on someone else's step — Waiting.
3. **Shift.** Whatever survives the first two steps moves to a day with a free place.
4. **Crunch.** More than three genuine Key tasks are left — the day is declared a Crunch day: the Focus is the top three Key tasks, and the 2+1 rule is suspended for today. The Streak does not break.

**Three Crunch days in a row are not a crunch but a lifestyle: the method demands a portfolio review.**

## ② Stuck

A task has been postponed twice. In the evening, at Closing, it has exactly three exits:

- **Tomorrow as Key.** Admit it is genuinely important — and close it first.
- **Freezer.** Admit honestly: not now. The idea waits without pressure.
- **The trash.** Admit it is not going to happen. That is a decision too.

**There is no third postponement.**

This is how the list stops hoarding "eternal" tasks: anything that twice failed to fit into a day gets an explicit decision instead of quietly rotting at the bottom.

## ③ Ignited

A new Key for today appears during the day — the method reassembles the Focus, explicitly and with an explanation. No silent reshuffles: you see what ignited, what entered the Focus and what gave up its place.

**What you do not see is not burning; if it catches fire, the method will tell you.**

## The Unload: a real example

Morning of a coffee shop owner: cells ①–② hold six Key tasks. Selection does not begin — the Unload runs first:

1. **Honesty.** "Approve the new sign" — what does approving it today decide? Nothing, the contractor can wait until Friday → Important. "Update the site for the promo" — the promo starts next Monday → Important. Four Key tasks left — still an overload.
2. **Whose move.** "Collect the papers from the tax office" — the shop manager can do it → Delegated. "Pay for the beans" — the supplier has not sent the invoice yet, so the move is theirs → Waiting. Two Key tasks left.
3. **Shift** is not needed: two Key tasks are no longer an overload.
4. **No crunch.** Selection starts the usual way: the matrix, the 2+1 rule, the Focus.

Six "key" tasks turned into two genuine Key tasks in three minutes — and it is a day you can close again.

## Failure is part of the method

The day went sideways — that is not the method breaking. That is the method.

- **A partially closed day is an honest result.** "2 out of 3" is "2 out of 3", not guilt.
- **A Crunch day does not break the Streak.** A firefighting day is still a lived day.
- **What was not closed moves on deliberately.** In the evening, by your decision — and in the morning there is zero overdue.
- **The Streak knows how to forgive.** Closed days add up into strength and do not burn away because of one stumble.

The method does not punish. A broken day is data for tomorrow's choice, not a verdict.

**A steady pace over months beats a heroic day.**
