CALM method · Chapter 4

Closing and the week: the loop around the day

Closing and the week in CALM are the loop around the day: the evening closes today properly and prepares tomorrow; the week spreads tasks across the days in advance. With an endless list the working day never ends — Closing gives you back the right to finish it.

Closing — the right to finish the day§

In the eveningYour day as it isA clean tomorrow
  1. Result. Success of the day = the Focus is closed — the Streak grows. Partially — recorded honestly: "2 out of 3", without guilt.
  2. Carry-over. Whatever was not closed moves on deliberately: to the nearest day with a free place, to the Freezer, or to the trash.
  3. Stuck tasks. Anything postponed twice is resolved here: Key tomorrow · the Freezer · the trash. There is no third postponement.
  4. "What is key tomorrow?" The answer raises that task to Key — in the morning it is already in the Focus.
  5. Energy check-in — Charge.

The day is finished, the rest waits until morning — and in the morning nothing is overdue.

Zero overdue by morning.

The Streak: closed days add up§

Closed days add up into strength — that is the Streak. It counts the days you closed, not the tasks you ticked, and it knows how to forgive: a crunch day does not break it, and a single stumble does not burn it. The point is not a perfect record but a pace you can hold.

Charge: care for the pace§

Rest is not a task in a tracker but a structure of time. Charge is not a fifth coordinate — it is care for the pace: an evening check-in ("how is your energy?") and attention to burnout signals in behavior, when postponements start growing and closings creep into the night. The method's answer is a simple one: "tomorrow I will assemble an easier day."

The week decides what gets into the days§

The week decides what gets into the days. The morning decides what matters today.

  1. Facts. How many days were closed; the Grow/Stay and Work/Life balances — where the week actually went.
  2. Spread across days. The week's tasks are placed on days that still have free places.
  3. Freezer. Defrost what has ripened, clear out what has not.

Places: the capacity of a day§

"Spread across days" needs an answer: what is "a day with a free place"? The answer: a day holds 6 tasks — Focus 3 + Bonus 3. Fewer than six dated Do tasks means there is a place; seven or more means the day is overfilled. Overfilling is not an error — the morning will push the tail into "not today" — but the week's job is to surface the imbalance in advance, while it is still cheap to fix.

The planning currency is places, not hours: the method contains no time estimates.

The working figure during the self-test

Six is a starting number, not dogma: the week calibrates capacity by fact. The ritual compares the plan against actual closings, and a stable discrepancy in either direction is a reason to shift your personal capacity. The calibration rule will be finalized at the v1.4 gate, on self-test data.

Grow coverage and the Week theme§

  • Grow coverage. The week makes sure every working day has at least one Grow candidate — otherwise the morning's "+1" place will reach into the portfolio for a Grow task, and the choice becomes arbitrary.
  • Week theme. 1–3 textual directions, approved at the weekly ritual: what this week is about. It is never called a "Focus" — the Focus always means three tasks.

What it looks like: a freelancer's Friday§

Here is how the ritual can run for a freelance designer:

  1. Facts. Three days closed out of five: on Tuesday and Thursday the Focus went to a client pile-up — almost all Stay. The balance of the week: Grow sagged, Life never made it into the Focus.
  2. Spread. For next week the portfolio case study (Grow) goes to Tuesday and the 3D course (Grow · Life) to Thursday: both days hold fewer than six dated Do tasks, so the places are there. Friday is already overfilled — nothing new goes on it.
  3. Freezer. The idea "templates for the marketplace" has ripened — it gets a Level and a date; two older ideas are deleted without regret.

Fifteen minutes — and every morning of the coming week already has something to build a Focus from.

The week is the second level of maturity in the method, not an entry barrier: you can start with a single day.
